*:・゚✧Anime spotlight: DanMachi Has Unusually Complex Characters For a Harem

danmachi

In Orario, fearless adventurers band together in search of fame and fortune within the monstrous underground labyrinth known as Dungeon. But while riches and renown are incentive enough for most, Bell Cranel, would-be hero extraordinaire, has bigger plans. He wants to pick up girls. Is it wrong to face the perils of Dungeon alone, in a single-member guild blessed by a failed goddess? Maybe. Is it wrong to dream of playing hero to hapless maidens in Dungeon? Maybe not. After one misguided adventure, Bell quickly discovers that anything can happen in the labyrinth–even chance encounters with beautiful women. The only problem? He’s the one who winds up the damsel in distress!!

From Kitsu

Also known as Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, this anime really isn’t about dating or being a harem, at all. If anything it simulates dungeon crawling RPG’s so well, that it gave me pangs to go and play one, though I haven’t because I was watching this.

I also find the “harem” tag is kinda…not really what this anime is about, at all. While in most harem anime the guy is surrounded by girls but he doesn’t like anyone, so they’re all good, in this one Bell likes Ais since the beginning of the show. She’s the girl he wants to impress, and make her think he’s cool and also date and kiss. In fact, he’s pretty clueless and hasn’t noticed any of the girls like him, his eyes are set and only see Ais.

Bell is a newbie adventurer, as in Level 1, poor and only got inside Hestia’s family because there was literally no one else in that familia, and she was kinda desperate herself :’D In that regard, it is very typical shounen anime, but I find Bell is a total cutie, and really sweet, so he doesn’t scream typical shounen hero. He’s a cute little roll that I just wanna nibble on, and protect, so whenever he faces off against foes far greater than him I’m always rooting for him. Plus he looks really adorable while concentrating and trying hard, okay? x)

This is based on the light novels by the same name, which I haven’t read, and of course, there’s a manga adaptation too, which I haven’t read, but I do feel like this show is super intended as an anime. In fact, the anime adaptation might be where it shines the brightest, as we can see all the flashy moves, the pretty nice animation, accompanied with a good OST. But hey, if you disagree, tell me! Since as said, I haven’t experienced the originals or other adaptations hehe

I think what I really enjoyed the most were both the rpg elements, I’m a total sucker for those, but also the story and the characters. Perhaps I’m wrong but I find none of them are stereotypes or cliches, instead they all have their own darkness, and complexities. Even side characters you might not think much of, have them. So I got pretty surprised by it, in the end I got even more curious for the rest of the characters background to be discovered. I’m expecting some very juicy bits for them, especially for the Gods and Goddesses ;P

I think if you aren’t as into flashy anime, or into RPG elements, but still like good characters, this might be for you. Don’t expect super deep complex plot, that’s not where it’s strengths are at. They’re definitely the characters from than anything else.

You can watch this on Viewster just like I did (highly approved!), or use Because Moe to find where else it’s showing.

Have you watched this yet? Or did you dismiss it as another harem cliche, like I did at first? Did your opinion change after watching, or is this just another harem cliche to you still? Tell me all, I’m curious!

Shenmue was a Product of its Time and an Experience Worth Having

7133_front

This was one childhood series that really impacted me. I remember being so wowed by it considering all I’d played was PS1 games, tho very good in CG’s, it was nowhere as gorgeous this game was (and still is!!!) so I’d play it just for the beauty. That strange, otherworld city that looked like nothing I’d ever seen or met. I’d play it without a memory card till the end of the first CD, until my mom bought me for me and I could finally play it.

No. of episodes 48

I’m not going to be saying if this is anime, or debating the semantics of anime, go ahead if you want to, but I don’t really care as long as I can watch~

This is the introductory season, we get to meet all the characters one episode at a time, good and bad, the world and its terms, and get an inkling of what’s on stake. We also get to see the teams emerge, their issues and resolving to get a stronger bond. A bonding season, you could say.

One of the things that attracted me to this show was that it was made by Monty Oum, rest his soul, maker of the Dead Fantasy which I love and felt sad it couldn’t be finished by him, another was that Pink and Lilli kept talking about it. Talk about one show enough with me and you’ll end up convincing me to give it a shot /winks suggestively xP

Coming to this show was jarring for multiple reasons. First was the English voices, I’m not used to them aside in cartoons. Second, the 3D graphics. Third was that the show starts kinda weirdly, it half plomps us in the middle of the story and tells us to figure it out, and in the other half slows down and barrel disposes all the exposition :”D

After I got used to the 3D, which is really good!, the English voices, also really good!, and the show started picking up pace, I must say I got quite hooked. Not to the fever point I’ve seen of some die-hard fans, but it’s definitely fun and super enjoyable. My favorite parts are the comedy scenes and the kickass battles. Monty Oum showed he could epic battles in Dead Fantasy, and he definitely demonstrated it here again, claps and props to him and all the team at RoosterTeeth that got involved in this show!

There’s not much that can be said, since this is a “meet the characters, the world, their relationship” type of season, there isn’t too much plot, it’s more of a setup, but definitely a good one. I ended up wanting to continue to Season 2, which is where, hopefully, the setup will blast open into non stop epic badassery. Or something of the sort xD

The episodes are also pretty short, good or bad things depending on tastes, to me they felt pretty good since I like quicker things. One thing can be said is that every episode is never dull, there’s always some action, some comedy and engagement between the girls, and occasional dude, yes GASP, this ain’t an all girl show and there’s plenty of focus on guys too. They’re hot and good looking too, specially undressed /winks ;P

I’m curious who has seen this, and what they’ve thought of it. Did the English voices put you off? Maybe the 3D graphics? Or maybe you liked all those? I’m curious, so tell me all!

*:・゚✧Anime Spotlight: Deadman Wonderland Dub is Awesome

75299l

It looked like it would be a normal day for Ganta Igarashi and his classmates—they were preparing to go on a class field trip to a certain prison amusement park called Deadman Wonderland, where the convicts perform dangerous acts for the onlookers’ amusement. However, Ganta’s life is quickly turned upside down when his whole class gets massacred by a mysterious man in red. Framed for the incident and sentenced to death, Ganta is sent to the very jail he was supposed to visit.

But Ganta’s nightmare is only just beginning.

The young protagonist is thrown into a world of sadistic inmates and enigmatic powers, to live in constant fear of the lethal collar placed around his neck that is slowed only by winning in the prison’s deathly games. Ganta must bet his life to survive in a ruthless place where it isn’t always easy to tell friend from foe, all while trying to find the mysterious “Red Man” and clear his name, in Deadman Wonderland.

I’d never seen this anime tho I knew about it because it was a popular title, so the lovely Pink decided to rectify that with a rabb.it session and my god, am I glad I finally watched it! She’s a surprising big fan of dubs, so I was like “okay let’s see this train-wreck”, but I was pleasantly surprised that the dub was great.

This show is filled with swearing, of the kind I’ve never heard before on an anime, and I was super shook and amazed, AND I WISH MORE ANIME GOT THIS KIND OF TREATMENT BECAUSE WOW. Tho tbh, MC’s voice was kinda…not that good at first, but it grew on me.
